Computer Music Control Systems
Whole Keyboard Drum Pad v0.1
Use your entire computer keyboard as a pair of bongos! The whole left side is one bongo, right hand is the other. Hit whatever keys you’d like on each side.
Key-Chord Trigger v0.5
No need to learn pesky guitar chords! Just kidding. But you can use your number keys to play diatonic chords with this patch. Great for ear training, as a quick composition aid, or potentially a live instrument.
Camera as Controller
Ball Whack v1.2 (download coming soon!)
Move to whack the ball! This patch detects movement via the built-in camera on your device. Take 3-4 steps back from the camera for most fun gameplay.
Robot Composers
JS Choir v1.1 (download coming soon!)
In western music ear training courses, we learn that there are certain expectations for one note to lead to another. By estimating the probabilities of every diatonic note to lead to another, I created a guided-random algorithm for automatic melodics composition. Then, I added a rhythmic randomization layer, and created four voices – three which always act together, and one “soloist” which can play even when the other three do not.
With four voices and an automatic drum kit, I think it sounds pretty cool!
Future work:
– The sounds you hear are all General MIDI – aka, the sound of old video games and cheap electric keyboards. With a library of better sounding sounds, Even better would be integration with Ableton…
– It doesn’t know form, or even repeat any phrases. Some semblance of what a song is would make the music more coherent. This would also make other weaknesses in the composition algorithm and probability tables more transparent.
